Vpn Dsl Routers

First of all it should be established what's a DSL router with VPN access. A DSL VPN router is a router intended to rather than to use a common Internet connection and isolate it's local area network only within itself, it should connect to another router to bring the machines of both LANs together.

The Linksys Cable DSL VPN routers are the most commonly used for this end since they are after all Cisco's home brand of routers. They're powerful, they have plenty of features and VPNing is one of it. You must remember however that sometimes these routers have proprietary methods of creating VPNs and therefore should be used in pairs before even considering the configuration.

If you want to use a Netgear VPN DSL router you should use it on both ends of the connection, or if you prefer a Cisco VPN DSL router the same should be made for maximum compatibility. Once they are in place though the configuration is relatively easy and direct.

To configure VPN DSL router you should access the configuration page of each router and access the VPN/PPTP section of the router to setup the connection. The first field to be filled out is if the router will be doing a server or client role. Obviously, one of the two machines will have to be a server and the other will connect to it.

The router that becomes a server only needs to have configured a password, so that the client router may use when trying to access. The client router however should have configured not only the server router's IP, but also what kind of interconnection will be done. Typically you may want to pool together both local area networks, but there may be exception and that is when these configurations become important.

Most small business oriented routers will have all the features required to create a PPTP/VPN connection safely without problems, but it's imperative that both routers are alike to increase compatibility. You should not attempt to use routers who don't have proper pass-through resources since the VPN packets may be lost and the connection between routers won't be created properly and the communication between computers will be broken.
